Parents of Prom Goers: re:TH!NK wants your teen to have a safe and fun prom event. So do you! Check out these tips for some ideas on what you can do.
• Communicate with your teen about your expectations and the potential cautions of the night. Discuss drugs (including prescription drugs), alcohol, and sexual behavior. Review the refusal tactics all teens have been taught. • Be there for them! Make sure your teen knows you're available any time no matter what for a ride home, help, or just advice…no questions asked(at that time) • Set rules for the night with consequences for any violations and follow through. • Location Location! Know where you child plans on going before prom, where the prom event is actually held and what they plan on doing after prom. If they are going to a friends' house, make contact with those parents to ensure they will be home.
• Don't Host Underage Drinking Parties, EVER!
Text Messages are Good Reminders We all know youth use texting as their #1 method of communication. A great way to keep in touch and communicate is through texting. We have put together a number of texts that many parents will be sending out before, during, and after prom. You should check in with your child, it shows you care, and also reminds them of your expectations. Just imagine most of the prom goers getting texted at once from their parents!!! Join parents across the county and text your kids on prom night!
